Conflicting WorldViews: Western & Islamic

Based on experience from the first week of my online course on Real Statistics: An Islamic Approach, I have re-designed the course to make it self-paced, and split it into self-contained modules.  I recommend the first module, on Islamic Principles of Education, to all teachers and students, because it sets out the striking differences between Western and Islamic approach to education. In particular, there is very little awareness among Muslims that Western educational methods teach us to look at the World in a way that is not compatible with Islamic teachings. The first lesson of the first module is provided below. After completion of all lessons in a module, a quiz will be available for self-testing, and passing the quiz will provide access to materials in module 2. ::: Module 1: Islamic Principles of Education :::

Lesson 1.1: Recognizing the Conflict

This lesson is addressed to a Muslim audience. The goal of this lesson is to create awareness of a deep conflict that exists in the minds of nearly all Muslims, often without conscious awareness that there is such a conflict. Educated Muslims learn two sets of lessons about the world we live in, one which comes from our heritage and the Islamic traditions, and another one which we learn from our Western education. These two create WorldViews which are dramatically opposed to each other in many ways. Using IWV for Islamic WorldView, and WWV for the Western worldview, both IWV and WWV make strong competing claims:

[IWV] The world was in darkness until the sun rose in the Arabian desert with the advent of Islam. The teachings of Islam transformed the course of history and launched a civilization which enlightened the world for a thousand years. For various reasons, there have been temporary setbacks leading to decline and degeneration among Muslims over the past few centuries. But Islam contains complete and perfect guidance for all times to come, and implementing the teachings of Islam today would once again lead the Muslims to world leadership, as it did for a thousand years in the past.

[WWV] The world was enveloped in darkness and ignorance, until the sun of reason rose in Europe in the sixteenth century. Mankind learned to think for themselves, reject superstition, discover science and technology, and make tremendous advances in all fields of knowledge, for the first time in human history. They created civilization, literature, philosophy, and everything good known to mankind today.  Their accomplishments have shaped the world as we know it, and far outshine those of any other civilization.

It should be obvious that these two worldviews are in direct conflict with each other. Islam teaches us IWV while our Western education is based entirely on WWV. Nearly all of the education we receive teaches us about the accomplishments of the West over the past few centuries. All of the subjects we study – mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, statistics, economics, politics – even business and medical ethics – are based on textbooks written by Western authors based on the Western intellectual tradition. There is no reference to the Quran and Hadeeth, and we search the teachings of Islam in vain for any guidance about these modern subjects. The evidence for the truth of the claims of WWV seems strong and almost impossible to deny.  But acceptance of WWV leads to an impossible dilemma for Muslims. The standard interpretation of Qur’an, 5:3 “This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed my favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion” is that the Quran offers us complete and perfect guidance for all times to come. Yet, it seems that success in the World today depends almost entirely on acquiring the Western knowledge which they have gathered over the past three centuries, and which is not present anywhere in the Quran and the Hadeeth.

The first module of the course will be devoted to resolving this apparent contradiction, and explaining why, despite appearances to the contrary, the teachings of Islam do contain complete and perfect guidance for today. Our goal will be to establish that Islamic teachings are just as revolutionary today as they were 1440 years ago – time has not made them obsolete. Rather, the prophecies made about the decline of Islam have come true:

  1. Islam came as a stranger, and will become a stranger.
  2. Muslims will follow the ways of the Jews and Christians, even crawling into snake-holes after them.
  3. Nothing will remain of Islam except its name, and nothing will remain of the Quran except its writing.
  4. Enemies will gather over Muslims like diners gather for a feast. Although Muslims will be large in numbers, they will be weakened by the disease of love of this world and the fear of death.

The goal of the first module is to remove this apparent contradiction by explaining how to make sense of an IWV, in face of the apparent dominance of the West. Some clues about how to make sense of the world in light of IWV, which necessarily involves rejecting WWV, are furnished by the Quran. The Quran (3:192) tells us not to deceived by the apparent power and luxury enjoyed by the unbelievers in this temporary world. The Quran (43:33) tells us that God would have made the houses of the unbelievers out of silver. He did not do so out of His Mercy, because this would have made the temptation to leave Islam too great for the Muslims. The point is that the apparent worldly success of the West is not the criteria by which we should judge the value of Western knowledge.

This post (1.1) is meant to create awareness of a conflict which exists in our minds, perhaps without our conscious awareness of it. In later posts, we will go over how this conflict can be resolved. Some hints in this direction have already been provided. But it is important to note that we have absorbed the Western WorldView (WWV) over many, many, years of training in a Western system of education. Dislodging it from our minds is not at all easy or simple. Many different kinds of questions and perplexities arise in the process. There are hundreds of myths that we have absorbed, and learned to think of as truth. The best way to approach the process of unlearning is to simple hold our current beliefs which support the WWV in suspension – put them aside while we learn a different way of looking at world created by an IWV. After this new way of looking at the world becomes clearer and stronger, then we will be in a position to compare the two.

QUESTIONS TO PONDER – I would like to ask readers to provide answers in comments on this post. We will take up these questions for further discussion later.

Q1: How do YOU resolve this conflict in your own mind, between the two worldviews?

Q2: Why is there so little awareness of this conflict? Muslims teachers happily adopt Western educational methods, without any recognition that the textbooks they teach form create a Western WorldView in the minds of readers, alienating them from Islam.

    As, Sir Dr. Asad Zaman mentioned two different thoughts like IWV and WWC. The first QUESTION that came into my mind is that we should do some research on this point that How 1400 years ago, Muslims was able to convert the large part of World from Morocco to China and Indonesia. Even, they have not to much Libraries, Universities, Colleges, books even Holy Quran was not compiled in bookish form. The Answer in my mind is that there is huge difference between practical Knowledge (Ilm-bil-Sohbat) and bookish Knowledge (Ilm-bil-Kutab). Saahaba attended the [Sohbat (company) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)].They learned (Unssen belive ) directly from company of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), so they have 100% ability to show practical Islam to everyone. The people accepted their invitation and accepted their message, culture, language,etc. Unfortunately, we have just bookish Knowledge and have no capacity to represent the Islam. So, the step one is to change (purify) our minds and hearts. By our actions, we should change the mind of Western World that color of blood is same and our prophets are same. We should remove the fears from their hearts, which is only possible with Practical Knowledge (Practical Knowledge will always dominate the Bookish Knowledge).Bookish Knowledge cannot survive in front of Practical Knowledge, it doesn’t meaning that we are denying Bookish Knowledge.

    Every time we are in two types of states, either we are conveying message (influencer, داعی) and on the other hand, we are accepting (influenced by someone, مدعو). There is trade off between (داعی and مدعو), so the simple model will be work like if (influencer > influenced by someone) then influencer will be present his all assets (Thoughts, lifestyle, Language, Culture, etc) and vice versa. The second point is that the nation or any block will be physically dominate on any other defeated or slave nation. The occupier has more chance to influence the defeater with their culture, educational system, language, etc. So, since 16th Century the Western World is dominating physically on Eastern World in the form of true representative or in the form of their puppets. So, Eastern world is accepting blindly everything from West, even they have too much high-quality knowledge and talents. More than 80% society is badly brainwashed by the West and our Muslim teachers are feeling inferiority complex in adopting their own values and Knowledge.

  3. How do YOU resolve this conflict in your own mind, between the two worldviews?
    in my opinion, this problem arose due to lack of Islamic knowledge. if a person critically analyses what he is reading or listening from others, he can resolve this conflict in his mind. but our education system produces reboots not human with a critical mindset. this problem can be solved by studying the biographies of Prophet SAAW and his companions. Islam is a system to develop human-like Asaraf, ul,makhlokat. we mostly ask a question Islamic system how can achieve development like capitalist system or communism. so Islam develops human and that human develops the countries or nations e.g Hazar Umer bin Khattab.
    Q2: Why is there so little awareness of this conflict?
    the answer is very simple for this question, as we have grown in the colony of the west (GBR) so we follow the habits of paradox class of the colonial rulers. We have not even our own education system and any other system we are carrying. So nobody knew that we are carrying out the WWV in our life and every field of life due to lack of Islamic knowledge. It is a necessary initiative to educate at least teachers about IWV to encounter the WWV so that our system produces human not reboot to earn money.

With regards to question 1, resolving these two views will be that I will be holding my IWV as perfect which is in accordance with Q5:3 while identifying the flaws of the WWV so as the create a situation for alternative, then IWV will now easily flourish. I adopted this approach because it’s not going to be easy to flush out the WWV at once owing to its spread and momentum, so it has to be a gradual process. Even our beloved prophet(pbuh) did not spread Islam at once to dislodge the unbelievers.. It’s was a gradual process when it he commenced the spread of Islam.
    More so, as per question 2, there is little knowledge of this conflict owing to the fact that we Muslim’s have been indoctrinated with accepting WWV hook and line as a perfect view for succeeding in this world. Thus, making them to see IWV as only an act of worship while adopting WWV as a means of survival in this world. More so, the IWV have limited access to media to spread its view while the WWV controll the media, therefore telling the populace what they want them to hear. Also, the Muslim’s need to leave their comfort zone to seek for knowledge so as to have more individuals in its Dawwah strive.

Q1: In my mind the solution to resolve this conflict I agree with the point you have raised here i.e. to completely understand the IWV without making any comparison of it with the alternate view. Once we establish the understanding and know what form of education will be based on that view then we can find a one to one comparison of the approaches.
    Practically for starting point may be to unlearn the WWV we can start from having a look towards the Westren education for its own outcomes (benefits and harms). Particularly benefits should be seen for value and provisions for each single human life.
    Q2: I think there are multiple reasons for the limited awareness about this conflict.
    1. A very strong belief in visible scientific advancements.
    2. Keeping the benchmark of success as per described the west (They are successful in science and worldly affairs so they must be right in all streams of life).
    3. Deep rooted complex in minds following the colonial suppression and historical decline of Muslim civilization that has created a sense of severe complex. We believe in our inability to capture the revolutionary knowledge that we have missed over centuries.
    4. We have admitted in our minds and hearts that there are two lives one is of this world and the other is hereafter, later needs to be worked on through Islamic teachings and worship but for the former we necessarily needs to follow the footstep of the West (because they are advance in this world). This is logical as we are permitted to adopt whatsoever benefits us for the life facilities.
    5. Extreme fear of rejecting the WWV as if we do so, it will lead us to the stone age.

  7. Response on questions by Mr. Farhan
    Q1: We need to understand the fundamentals of the Islamic World View. Once we know the principles of the IVW, we can have an inner filter in our mind to be able to reject whatever goes against the IVW. In the longer term, as Muslims, we need to develop our own curriculum in different areas of knowledge so that there remains no conflict.
    Q2: There is little awareness of the fact because mostly Muslims are not inclined towards following their Deen. Rather they even do not know their Deen properly. Hence, only one particular point of view is absorbed through the world education channel and rest remains almost untouched (or very less importance is paid to it).

    Therefore, the conflicting situation does not occurs in a Muslims’ mind because the WWV is nurtured in much more than IWV. On the other hand, IWV is given attention negligibly. Hence the major conflict is not created and therefore stimulus to resolve it does not come.

      Lack of understanding of Islam and what principles/fundamentals it stands for is the main cause of the little awareness. I feel that one of the key reasons for our drift away from Islamic teachings is our increasing distance from the Arabic language. The original sources of Islam and the works of the great scholars are all in Arabic. The translations don’t give the same powerful effect as the original. Umar ibn Khattab(RA) said, “Learn the Arabic language; it will sharpen your wisdom.”
